I've started working on autodetecting whether mimencode or uuencode
should be used for a given inline method.

Right now, if %s is the encoding or decoding command, I do

    %s </dev/null >/dev/null

and check if that returns a zero exit code.

Do you think that's enough?  Or should I also check that the result
is appropriate?
