Both cases I've used the recent Tramp, which removes ange-ftp from
file-name-handler-alist safely. I guess it was something else with
ange-ftp.

But it's not worth for further investigations; ange-ftp.el differs on
173 places, comparing the version coming with Emacs 21.2, and the HEAD
in CVS.
