Maybe. But is there indeed no output with that command? What happens with

# /bin/ls --color=never -al /dev/null >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; echo $?

address@hidden /]# /bin/ls --color=never -al /dev/null >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; echo $?
0
