No, nothing gets written to the syslog when I try a connection.  Also
this morning I needed to SSH to a machine other than athena and that
hung in the same way—this was a password connection rather than a SSH
key one, but I never got asked for my password.

Thanks for your help in any case.  Maybe someone else on the list will
have some ideas.
