Details:

Hello!

And sorry, I realise I could as well post this on the forum, but I have as of
yet no forum account.

My suggestion to balance the Dwarvish Guardsman line:

1. Halve damage dealt by them while defending. (Easier to attack guardsmen.)

2. Increase xp. With stubbornness, guardsmen can after this be killed _before_
they level. (And not milked for xp once first having helped them leveling to
stalwarts.)

3. Remove random trait "quick". This way Guardsmen units are mostly either
resilient _or_ strong, which makes sense. And there will be no complaining
about 5 movement guards. (Scenario designers can of course use quick and loyal
in guards too, if so wished.)

4. Considering that 1/3 of guardsmen now are strong and another 1/3 are
resilient, you can decrease their hp to 32 (from 35). Adjusting stalwart hp to
39 (from 37) makes sense so that guardsmen aren't tougher than stalwarts that
have no traits (e.g. leader units or scenario units).

5. Definitely _keep_ the "steadfast" as 50% damage reduction. It is much more
intuitive and easier to understand than the proposed 30%, especially when
combined with the idea that their damage dealt while defending is also halved.
I think this is important as an opposite parallel ability to "charge".

6. If necessary, damage dealt can still be reduced by reducing guardsmen's
melee attack from 5-3 to 4-3 and stalwart from 7-3 to 6-3.

7. To make it better possible to kill level 2 and 3 guardsmen, reduce their
defence in villages to 50%.

Yours sincerely,

a fan and an enthusiastic player.

PS. I will attach sample config files.

I've discussed this issue with Dragonking, and as steadfast had already been
changed before I filed this, I'll withdraw my suggestion. Feel free to remove
this item.

Adjusting the line's units' hitpoints in such a way that they have at least 7
hp difference between levels would still make sense IMO. Stalwarts having 2 hp
more than Guardsmen is strange (especially now that steadfast has been
changed). I suggest 35, 43 and 51 hp. (Lvl2's and 3's may need more even, with
the changed steadfast.)

And I still like the idea of removing quick. :-)

Anyhow, feel free to remove this item, and thank you for your good work in
developing Wesnoth.
