Hi xboard is written in good ol C.  You also would have to familarize yourself with git and there is a bit of paperwork to contibute to fsf projects.  But that is getting ahead of ourselves.  I would just dowload the source code and play with it a bit.

i just went through the help page at xboard-gnu, i really wish to contribute to xboard or gnu projects but i don't know what it takes to contribute i mean what languages do you use. so if you could let me know the languages do you use in development, i wish to learn them and contribute. i have little programming experience but never developed anything notable.
