  I'd suggest a link to Jack (jackit.sf.net).  It doesn't have the kind
of network transparency that I'm assuming underlies (in part) that
question,  but it's been talked about quite frequently on the
development list,  and several of the developers have talked about
adding a network transport layer of some kind on top of it, once it's
hit a 1.0 release.

  Currently, though, it's turning into a very good cross-platform/arch
low-latency sound server, that kicks the pants off of all the other
existing solutions in this problem space.  :)
