Sorry for the little OT: 
But I really do not like the code layout of XMMS - they mix together
GUI stuff with non-GUI-things like player handling, codecs, device
handling, etc. This makes it quite inflexible an inrobust.
I've started my own branch of it - rewriting most of the code - for
quite a while. But the project is currently sleeping very deep :(
