Beep. Xouvert's api is NOT going to pull away from XFree86's. X11 is a

work because of this. That will not change.

What API you're talking about ? libx + friends ?
Their interface of course _must_ stay the same. If we really someday
write an complete new client library, this one has to coexist with
libx, and maybe libx will be an wrapper for the new one.

I recommend you buy the O'Reilly set of books on programming for xlib,
and the one describing the X protocol. To explain these things would
take quite a while, and I have to admit my ability to explain it in
words isn't the best; I have more of a visual/intuitive understanding of
how the pieces of X fit together.

If you're talking about the X protocol - well, if really necessary, we could introduce an complete new one. The Xouvert server then speaks multiple display protocols.

Uh. No. X protocol is set in stone. Isn't going to change as long as
X is X.

Enrico, you've been making a lot of suggestions which show you don't
really understand X, or else that you aren't much of a coder. Please
write some simple Xlib apps; this will increase your understanding of X
immensely. Read the section about X in the Unix Haters Handbook. Read
up on it. It's simple, but not simple for me to explain briefly.

Your suggestions for "simple" ideas are actually a lot of work to
implement, thus breaking the Unix principle of simplicity of
implementation as being one of the highest goods.
