Media Application Server or MAS provides network transparent sound and media
capabilities for X window system and is part ot x.org affilicated
technologies

it was developed by SAI with the endorsement and approval of X.Org,
and with partial financial support by X.Org and Sun and released under
the MIT ("X") license.

though i've never used it , my friend who tried it said it was quite good ;)
it is in the works as an X standard
