But before writing megabytes of configure stuff, you should 
perhaps think about my idea with an new build system, which
models the software in modules an features. From such an quite
abstract modelling, it should be very easy doing those things
like config menus.

I personally have very bad experiences with automake + friends.
Sometimes it's almost unusable. On every third package I have to 
hack something in to make it work some way.
