We recently finished our book Linux Toys (search for it on Amazon). One of
the projects required removing the mouse pointer from a standalone picture
display appliance we built. We tried to do it in VGA mode using a number
of display tools, but none did it the way we wanted to see it done (long
story). We were forced to use xview (another long story). It worked except
for the mouse pointer getting in the way. We tried a great many hacks to
simply shut the mouse off in X, but try as we may, X wouldn't even start
up without some sort of mouse pointer (even /dev/null).

To make a long boring story short, we ended up using a one pixel mouse
pointer graphic as a hack. It would have been so very nice if the external
i/o devices could be controlled (as the original poster suggested). (Yes,
I realize that some apps will misbehave, this probably would not be a
trivial adventure)
