Well, one reason might be that there haven't been 
any "big X forks" until recently. Both Xouvert and 
the Xserver project at freedesktop.org have only 
just launched some months ago. And both, I suspect, 
are really only development branches of XFree86.
(That is, good and stable code will eventually 
trickle back into XFree86.)

In a sense you already answered that one yourself.
These things are being developed right now, so they
don't really seem ready for prime-time yet. That is
probably why people are telling you to wait until 
2004/2005.
