I don't think replacing imake is an option, at least in the foreseeable
future. Sure, building X is something of a mess, but it builds. It's not
much of an itch to scratch, ya know?

also have a look at scons http://scons.sourceforge.net/ . As a build
system, it is very powerful and capable.
