To the uninitiated, it is stupid. But actually, it is copied directly
from the MIME standard, which is used in many things, including the HTTP
web protocol. MIME is an expanded version of the the original format of
email messages, which also require a blank line between the body of the
message, and all the headers. MIME is extremely flexible; it lets you
put any kind of data in a file, and be able to parse the file, knowing
what each part is.
