The real words are ``never use internal variables in any other project
than Autoconf itself, and as much as possible, when people might
depend on some result, make it public, i.e., non ac_''.

If we do compute it systematically, please, indeed, get rid of
ac_ln_s.  If not, I would not be against computing it anyway.
