I do not understand this reasoning.  AFAIK Bourne shells fork with
redirected { }, newer shells don't.  Neither fork when not redirected.
For the newer shells that would be an efficiency gain.  For neither
would there be a problem.  Right?

And on windows, for example, every fork not done is good!
(mingw makes my 500 MHz home machine feel like 66).

There are more places than just that one which could be changed.
