I think the only thing we should be mindful of when the time comes to
move getopt.m4sh into Autoconf is that the GNUish semantics I have
supported are not subtly different from the GNUish semantics of the
existing macros.  Perhaps we can ease the transition by renaming or
wrapping up parts of getopt.m4sh in the existing macro names.

Agreed.

I'm not planning on worrying too much about how to merge things after
2.66, since getopt.m4sh is still cooking in Libtool for the moment...
