| an option to protect people (e.g. myself) who already abuse Automake
| by passing through patsubst expressions).

Yep, by default Automake must not let the users do nonportable
things. I'm sorry about that, but I believe it's a strong
requirement.
I'd like to hear from Alexandre and Tom though.
