How frustrating not to see what failed...
Could you try this:
/tmp % touch foo nostromo 16:38
/tmp % chmod 000 foo nostromo 16:38
/tmp % cp -pR foo bar nostromo 16:38
cp: cannot open `foo' for reading: Permission non accordée
and this:
src/am/tests % make check TESTS=install2.test nostromo 16:39
make check-TESTS
make[1]: Entering directory `/mnt/nostromo/home/lrde/prof/akim/src/am/tests'
PASS: install2.test
