It's not a hard thing for you to fix: just use a different name!
'AS=as' is what 99.999% of your userbase will expect to be 'correct'.
If you want to define AS=$(CC) then call it something else: AM_AS would
be my suggestion. No one will have any problem with AM_AS being CC,
and you don't break the code and assumptions of your users.
