Plus character (+) in Makefile.am

hi

i'm trying to build a library called libhelp++.a, but i get the following
error when i run automake.

help++/src/Makefile.am:8: bad macro name `libhelp++_a_SOURCES'
help++/src/Makefile.am:8: invalid unused variable name:
`libhelp++_a_SOURCES'

is there a work around for this problem?
