That's what we do.  I've never used this in a directory other than the
top level, but I think it is really up to the user to decide whether
this makes sense.  Let's continue supporting this.

I like this too.

Another thing to think about is whether autoconf will ever have files
removed by `maintainer-clean' (or any other clean rule).  If so that
will affect what we decide.
