autom4te needs too much memory

Apparently a recent change to a configure.in causes autom4te to need more
memory that is available.

Any ideas on how to work around or solve this problem?

This is happening under 2.53; at the moment I can't use 2.53b on the project
in question because 2.53b's autoconf hates the "duplicate" registrations of
Makefile's in various case statements.
