features by version information?

Hello all,

I've only recently started to try to really learn the ins and outs of
the auto-tools chain, and have been having a very hard time figuring out
how to do things so that scripts work nicely on different versions of
the tools.  Nothing too ancient, just so developers could use, say,
RH7.3, Debian stable, and RH9 for example.

Does anyone have links to places on the web where information about what
features were introduced with what version of automake is available?  Or
just where the manual for the last several releases is up online?

Any help appreciated,
