Yes, automake --version was replying with 1.4-p6. I was relying too much on my
distro's version numbering for the package.
After running these 2 commands:
# export WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5=1
# export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.7
automake acts as version 1.7.7
