Error: am__fastdepCC does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL

I'm getting the following error on Fedora Core 2 (it used to work but no 
longer).

/usr/share/automake-1.8/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear in 
AM_CONDITIONAL

I see many posting on the google with the same error message.    Can you 
describe the actual reason
why?    The most of the goole reply was to update the version.    I'd 
like to know the reason.

Here are the versions on this Fedora Core2 PC:

autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
automake (GNU automake) 1.8.3
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.6 (1.1220.2.95 2004/04/11 05:50:42)
