Extremely. Folk doing serious Fortran development routinely
experiment with multiple compilers, and would not appreciated being
limited in any way here.
As well, Fortran vendors tend to put their efforts into improving the
optimisers, and seem to be careless about supporting conventional
option sets. This means that automake/autoconf are probably even
more valuable to Fortran developers than to others, though I get the
impression rather few currently use automake/autoconf, though that's
partly because they currently support Fortran rather poorly.
