You forgot the first and foremost important part of writing such a
patch, in your otherwise nice explanation. Allow me to quote HACKING:

Yes. And you've almost completed the test case already; add
wow_CPPFLAGS = $(AM_CPPFLAGS)
and the usual blurp.
