Thanks for the very good tip. The problem was that the FreeBSD port of
automake (I used only official ports) installed aclocal macros in
/usr/local/share/aclocal19 while all the other ports (such as libtool
or gettext) were installed in /usr/local/share/aclocal and therefore
not found.

By merging the two directories and making a symbolic link, everything
now works.
