Above shows that it goes to .../lib/$(PACKAGE)

So?
  plugindir = $(libdir)/plugins
  plugin_LTLIBRARIES = ...

Are you sure you don't rather want $(pkglibdir)/plugins?

There is a general naming scheme where_HOW in Automake:

I thought you would have heard about it by now.
