This is a legitimate and sensible request, since obataining what you
want "the right autotoolish way" is a little bit tricky.  The automake
manual has a section dedicated to this, in fact:

I hope that will help you.  If you find something there that is unclear
or confusing, feel free to report it, so that we can improve the
documentation (and hopefully also help you with your doubts).
