The problem is a *partially* commented out maintainer-clean rule.installcheck-am: #maintainer-clean: maintainer-clean-recursive -rm -rf ./$(DEPDIR) -rm -f Makefile maintainer-clean-am: distclean-am maintainer-clean-generic
My solution: Put the address@hidden@ @address@hidden/$(DEPDIR)/address@hidden@'' lines inside the "if AMDEP" and remove the "@AMDEP_TRUE@" prefix. The hash character is then removed and the "rm" commands become part of the "maintainer-clean" rule. automake solution: either leave the rule in or remove the entire rule, please. Thank you!
