automake 1.16

here I sit, after hours of finding and adding lib's. thinking I am ready to 
compile automake 1.16
cd ~/tocompileautomake

error this file was made for automake 1.16 you have 1.14who is the super genius 
who decided this? how is the software supposed to be compiled if ya need the 
software to compile itself?why?
