Autoconf uses Automake 1.4 with some fixes (they exist in the latest
Automake packages for RedHat and Debian).

It would force every Autoconf maintainer to install Automake-1.4 (and to
have it first in $PATH), which is not really good.
You should run "make dist" with the same Automake in $PATH that was used
to generate Makefile.in.
