Well, that's not funny: we can't see the first failure you observed :(

IMHO we face a *(&£$ sh compatibility problem here.  I would not be
surprised that you had CDPATH set.  Or worse yet: a new line somewhere
in a dir name?

Anyway, could you make sure your /bin/sh _is_ zsh?
