I tried building autoconf 2.52g but it hung my terminal window during the
configure - this is all the
output I got:

% ./configure --prefix=/apps/asd/unix/gnu/autoconf/2.52g/SunOS5.6
checking for a BSD compatible install... config/install-sh -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... no
checking for mawk... no
checking for nawk... nawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for expr... /usr/bin/expr
checking for gm4... no
checking for gnum4... no
checking for m4... /apps/asd/unix/gnu/bin/m4
checking whether m4 supports frozen files... yes
checking for perl... /apps/asd/unix/gnu/bin/perl
checking for emacs... emacs
checking where .elc files should go...

I've attached config.log and conftest.out.

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by GNU Autoconf configure 2.52g, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.52g. Invocation command line was

  $ ./configure --prefix=/apps/asd/unix/gnu/autoconf/2.52g/SunOS5.6
