Yes, please, fix it in Automake.  And add a piece of documentation in
Autoconf emphasizing the importance of putting a </dev/null when the
command is not supposed to read its stdin.  I've seen too many checks
(Autoconf) and tests (Autotest) hangs because of this.

Seems overkill.
