It's best effort, nothing serious happens if we don't know exactly
what compiler it is.  Actually, maybe using whatis can provide even
more accurate information.  We know of now robust way to get this
information from the compiler, and in some cases (ranlib) it's even
``dangerous'', since it can create a file `--version' or `-v' :(

Would you suggest that we always try -v with a file?
