Dear Paul,

sorry but apparently this does not give further hints.  I executed from tcsh (which I used during installation), but the result is the same when using sh with exactly your commands.

Also, the errors remain the same when the testsuite is executed via bash.

Also, removing SUN's make from the path so only GNU make is left doesn't help.

Can you investgate why "configure" is saying "Broken Pipe"?
Something like this should do it:

  abs_top_srcdir='/bioinfnv/software/tools/gnu-autoconf-2.55'
  cd tests
  make testsuite
  ./testsuite -v -d 29
  cd testsuite.dir/029
  top_srcdir=$abs_top_srcdir /bin/bash -x ./configure 

The last command should output a lot of things; we are interested in
the part that is near the "Broken Pipe".
