It was a mistake for that error message wording to ever be put into
Autoconf.  You shouldn't report the problem to bug-autoconf;
you should report it to the gd developer.

Then you should be using a packaged distribution.  I typically use
Debian myself.  www.debian.org.  They support gd with PHP, for what
it's worth.

It's already widely accepted.  Most GNU/Linux users never run "make"
or "configure".
