autoconf and autom4te error

Hi,
Got a problem with autoconf.
Installed the binaries of autoconf, automake and m4 in /usr/local/bin. Added 
the path in path variable.

I have a configure.in file. How do i proceed with using autoconf?

i executed the following command
prompt> /usr/local/bin/autoconf configure.in

But output was-
/usr/local/bin/autoconf[198]: /usr/local/bin/autom4te:  not found

Please guide.
