A couple of thoughts. First, are you using the standard Solaris 8
Perl or your own installation? I seem to recall autoconf worked for
me on Solaris 8, with the standard Perl. Second, please try the
latest test version:
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.57a.tar.gz
