Sorry, I see that I gave you bad advice.  I thought that was "2.59a".
(2.57a is too old.)

That's weird.

I think it does work with the Perl that's shipped with Solaris 8.  If
it doesn't work with your Perl I'm afraid you'll have to debug why
your Perl is misbehaving.  (But I suspect the problem is elsewhere.)

Yes, that sounds plausible.  You need GNU m4 to run Autoconf.

However, the GNU m4 shipped with Solaris is a bit buggy.
I suggest upgrading to GNU m4 1.4.1.
