On openSUSE 12.1, "make check" reports a test failure:
231: configure directories FAILED (base.at:705)
How to reproduce:
$ ./configure --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu \
--prefix=/arch/x86-linux/gnu-inst-autoconf/2.69 \
CC="gcc -m32 -march=i586" \
CXX="g++ -m32 -march=i586" \
FC="gfortran -m32 -march=i586" \
LDFLAGS="-m32" \
CPPFLAGS=-Wall
$ make
$ make check

This is apparently due to the CONFIG_SITE environment variable that points
to /usr/share/site/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu. See
