Thanks for the bug report. I reproduced the problem and installed the attached
patch to Autoconf master to fix it.
One of the Automake 1.16.2 tests is using an Autoconf feature that was removed
in Autoconf 2.50; the patch works around the problem by having Autoconf merely
issue a warning about the removed feature, instead of failing entirely, as
this will be more backward-compatible. The patch also adds text to the
Autoconf manual to inform users about the need for avoiding shell variables in
header template file names.
