Description:

   if I have a list of commands, and there's a pipe anywhere in there,
   any variables set in the list seem to get erased.

Repeat-By:

   # this works
   { bs=1; echo "hi"; }
   echo "bs is $bs"

   # this doesn't work. bs2 will always be blank
   { bs2=1; echo "hi"; } | tee nothing.log
   echo "bs2 is $bs2"
