The bash version 2.03.0(2)-release (i686-pc-cygwin) and ls version ls (GNU fileutils) 3.16 on Windows NT 4.0 returns if it is used in this way:
FILES = $(ls)
different results if it is called more than one time in short time intervals:
A shell script produces this output

1. Files in /cygdrive/t/OeKB/xstp_classes/tce_gui/1.1.5/axioma/gui/exceptions: XBeanException.class XBeanException.java XException.class XEx
ception.java vssver.scc
2. Files in /cygdrive/t/OeKB/xstp_classes/tce_gui/1.1.5/axioma/gui/exceptions: 3. Files in /cygdrive/t/OeKB/xstp_classes/tce_gui/1.1.5/axioma/gui/exceptions: XBeanException.class XBeanException.java XException.class XEx
ception.java vssver.scc
