Look at your $HISTIGNORE variable. What is its value? If it is
either `ignorespace' or `ignoreboth', then lines beginning with
a space will not be inserted into the history.
If you don't have $HISTIGNORE, look for $HISTCONTROL.

I have no problems doing this. There isn't enough information here to
say what might be wrong, if anything.
