The build of bash-2.05a on Compaq/DEC OSF/1 5.0 successfully
created an executable which reports:
% ./bash --version
GNU bash, version 2.05a.0(2)-release (alphaev6-dec-osf(rev.)
Copyright 2001 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
Notice the unbalanced parentheses. This may be the source
of this build error:
make -i

***********************************************************
/bin/sh: syntax error at line 1: `(' unexpected
make: [bashbug] Error 2 (ignored)
since "make -n" shows a complex sed command being executed in the
failing step.
